Regenerated Rubber Elastomer (E2)

  • Typical weighted average mesh size of the recycled Vulcanized crumb Rubber raw material is approximately 40 – 60 mesh (depending on applications).
  • Regenerated Rubber Elastomer maintains a same small average mesh.
    • E2 sieved using ASTM 5644.
    • Since specific surface area has been increased and mesh sizes are still small, talc is required to separate particles.
    • For the example in the graph:
      • RM sieved without Talc: 40 mesh.
      • E2 sieved without Talc: 14 mesh.
      • E2 sieved with 5% Talc: 40 mesh.
  • E2 has unique characteristics
    • Small particle size.
    • Soft to the touch, with a “jagged” surface finish.
      • Increased mechanical bond.
    • Mixes easily in a TPE compound.
    • Product finish equivalent to parts made with virgin TPE compound (depending on loading).

Nomenclature and Behaviour

  • TPE Nomenclature
    • Thermoplastic (TP) is combined with the E2 (Elastomer 2.0).
    • A hard phase TP is blended with a dispersed soft phase (E2) that is elastic and partially x‑linked.
  • Behaviour
    • A TPE with the partially regenerated E2 elastomer allows for surface rubber polymer chain displacmenet when flexed.
    • E2 Performance Improves
      • Interaction with TP matrix.
      • Transfer of stress between the hard TP phase and the soft E2 phase.

Mechanical Properties

  • TPE2 = LDPE + E2-HTW
  • TPs and the loading of the E2 can be determined as per product requirements.

 

Regenerated Rubber (R2)

  • Typical weighted average mesh size of the recycled Vulcanized crumb Rubber raw material is approximately 40 mesh (Ø= 0.0165 in).
  • R2 maintains the same small weighted average mesh size of 40 mesh.
    • R2 sieved using ASTM 5644.
    • Since specific surface area has been increased and mesh sizes are still small talc is required.
    • R2 sieved with 5% Talc: 40 mesh.
    • R2 sieved without Talc: 14 mesh.
  • R2 has unique characteristics
    • Small (40 mesh).
    • Soft to the touch, with a “jagged” surface finish.
      • More x-linking sites available.
      • Increased mechanical bond.
    • Mixes easily in a compound.
    • Product finish equivalent to parts made with virgin compound.
  • Products can be made using 100% R2 with added Sulphur (2%).

Compound Loaded with Regenerated Rubber (R2)

  • Compound Formulation Preparation
    • Important: Substitute R2 for a portion of the Compound.
      • For example, if the virgin Compound has a total of 170 phr then add 3.0 phr of R2 to get 15% loading.
      • Do NOT substitute R2 as a portion of the rubber polymer.
    • Important: Add additional vulcanizing agent and accelerator.
      • The Compound has a pre-determined amount of vulcanizing agent (ex: 2.1 phr).
      • The substituted R2 requires vulcanizing agent as well.
        • The Sulphur from the “virgin phase” migrates to the R2 which will under-cure the virgin portion of the rubber compound.
        • A small increase in Sulphur and accelerator is required to ensure proper curing of the complete formulation.
      • Compounds usually have between 1.5 and 2.5 phr of Sulphur and rarely exceed 3.0 phr.
      • Typically add between 0.3 and 0.8 phr Sulphur ensuring that the total does not exceed 3.0.
        • Experimentation is required to determine the optimal quantity of additional Sulphur. Increase the accelerator while maintaining the same ratio.
      • For example, if the virgin compound has 2.1 phr of Sulphur then add 0.6 phr Sulphur for a new total of 2.7 phr as determined by experimentation. If the accelerator was 1.2 phr then increase it to 1.5 phr to maintain ratio of Sulfur to accelerator.
  • Mechanical Properties
    • Heavy Truck Tread loaded with R2 at 15% has similar mechanicals to control (see green line; control is 1.0).
    • Important:
      • The percent R2 added to the compound must be established by the product and client requirements.
      • Loading of R2 varies according to the application (ex: 10% to 40%).
